David O. Russell Compares Oscar Race to 'Sophie's Choice'

Sunday, January 30, 2011

The Fighter director David O. Russell has a classic dilemma on his hands -- two of his movie's stars received nominations for best supporting actress for the Academy Awards, airing February 27.

Russell told The Hollywood Reporter Saturday night that he will not chose between his film's two actresses, Melissa Leo and Amy Adams. He said it reminds him of the movie Sophie's Choice, where Meryl Streep's character had to decide which of her two children would be spared from death.

"They are all like my children, my family, at this point," he said at the Director's Guild Awards of Leo and Adams. "I want them both to be rewarded for their amazing performances.

"Thankfully, it's not my choice. If it was, I'd be living through Sophie's Choice."

Fortunately, Russell has one clear rooting option in another race -- Christian Bale is the only actor from The Fighter to be nominated for best supporting actor.

"So the only thing I can do is root for Christian," he said.
